Discovered in darkest Africa for
the outside world in 1902, the few hundred Mountain Gorillas that remain
continue to lead a perilous existence on the Virunga Volcanoes in the
oasis of misty forest that is their home, surrounded by insecurity and
violence, and a squabbling, burgeoning world greedy for land. Photograph
taken while working on the BBC film "Gorillas in the midst of man".
