LAKE NATRON and MOUNT LENGAI,
Great Rift Valley, Tanzania, 1989
|
A Rift Valley soda lake formed
in the volcanic ash effluent of active Mount Lengai, Lake Natron is
lethal to humans since its chemical cocktail burns the skin and fouls
the air. Its surface reaches 60 degrees Centigrade but Natron is much
favoured by flamingos for the red alga that provides them with a valuable
food source, and stains the surface such a brilliant red colour it is
visible from space. Photograph taken from a helicopter while working
on an IMAX large format film production.
